Lifeline’s Big Book Fair raises more than $122,000!

25 Mar 2013

Lifeline’s Big Book Fair has been another overwhelming success raising more $122,713 for Lifeline South Coast services in the Illawarra and South Coast.

The three day event held over the weekend showcased a record 85,000 books and more than 5,000 people through the door at the Illawarra Sports Stadium, Berkeley.

Lifeline South Coast Executive Director, Grahame Gould, has thanked the community for their ongoing support of the Fair,

“Every year, we are overwhelmed by the amazing support the community shows us in our fundraising event. From donating books all year round, to coming along and buying up big at the event – the Illawarra community is so generous,” he said.

“But the biggest thank you must go to our volunteers. Their dedication and support allows the event to be such a success".

Most popular categories included Children’s books, Fantasy, Horror, DIY, War and Military and Modern Literature.

Money raised at the event will go toward supporting Lifeline South Coast services in the Illawarra and South Coast including Lifeline’s 24-hour telephone crisis support service on 13 11 14.

The recently released ABS 2011 Causes of Death Report indicates that sadly, suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australian’s aged 15-44 – we lose 6 Australians every day accounting for almost 1 in 4 deaths. At Lifeline, we believe suicide is preventable and we all have a role to play.

Lifeline South Coast is a local service, which means that the funds raised locally stay here in our community and are used to help local people talk about their problems and find ways to solve them.

Each year, Lifeline receives 14,000 calls from people in the Illawarra and South Coast.
